Our History
Capstone Communities was formed in January 2012 as part of the restructuring of Capstone Development, the most active and experienced developer of student housing in the country for more than 21 years. Capstone Development’s portfolio included 118 communities and 58,000 beds in 31 states which reflected nearly $2.7 billion in project costs.
Today, Capstone Communities carries on Capstone Development’s legacy in the student housing industry with a specific focus on off-campus and new construction developments. Since transitioning to Capstone Communities over the last 13 years, Capstone’s portfolio features 48 communities developed with more than $2.6 billion in project costs.
Including Developments prior to 2012, Capstone’s Principals have been involved in the development of over 100,000 beds and $7.0 billion in total project costs across 37 states.
In 2017, Capstone expanded to the multifamily sector at the forefront of the build-for-rent movement with the introduction of its cottage-style development program. Capstone’s growing project footprint stretches across the Southeast with build-for-rent and mixed-use town center communities.

Because we approach every development opportunity as new and unique, we maintain flexibility and innovation throughout the predevelopment and construction phases which allows us to deliver the best possible product in each and every market. In Capstone’s long history, we have worked with many partners including college and universities, city governments, and public-private/non-profit organizations to successfully meet the goals and objectives of each stakeholder often working through numerous and complex development challenges.
